Karen Lippy

Karen Lippy has been an educator since 1981, currently as the Science Professional Development Specialist for the Olympic Educational Service District. Prior to this, she developed the environmentally-themed science and community service learning program sited at the Hood Canal Wetlands and has been nationally recognized for these efforts. This program, now replicated by teachers in other school districts, utilized the many opportunities in the Hood Canal Watershed, to engage students in action projects that benefitted the environment and provided exceptional opportunities to learn.

Karen holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from Washington State University and a Masters in Science Education from Western Washington University. She has won numerous teaching and environmental awards including The Washington State Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence, Washington State Department of Ecology’s Environmental Excellence Award, a 1993 Hood Canal Coordinating Council Environmental Achievement Award, North Mason 2001 Citizen of the Year, and the 2004 Radio Shack National Teaching Award.

Karen is a leader in transforming science and sustainability education. In her current position, she is working in partnership with the Pacific Education Institute to build a network for sustainability education throughout the Olympic Region. The Pacific Northwest Salmon Center holds a prominent position on the new GreenSTEMs network and will be a tremendous asset as we all work to ensure the “No Child is Left Inside.”
