Dan is involved in many monitoring, research and education projects.

Since 2005 he has co-managed the Hood Canal Dissolved Oxygen Program (HCDOP) and been involved in various field research components of that program, including the marine sampling and emergency response to algal blooms and fish kills.  He is also involved in the HCDOP Technical Advisory Group discussions for corrective action recommendations.

Dan has served as a biologist in the Salmon Recovery Funding Board process since 2003.  He serves as a tech team member of the Hood Canal Coordinating Council Lead Entity system to evaluate and prioritize salmon projects for the Hood Canal region.

Dan has incorporated his GIS experience into a seasonal StreamTeam intern program.  College students are provided internships to conduct stream habitat surveys while collecting GIS information that is used to characterize stream conditions.

Dan co-founded the HCSEG Adventure Salmon Camps in 2002 to immerse students in the ecology of Hood Canal. The adventures provided by the camps helps to give students a perspective of the watersheds related to salmon, our tribal neighbors, and the Hood Canal communities.

Dan has been a program leader for the WA NatureMapping Program since 1995.  He provides workshops to teachers, resource professionals, and community groups for developing skills in awareness, animal tracking, journaling, and recording and reporting observations for monitoring local biodiversity.

In addition, through his passion for teaching, he has provided Bat Chats for schools and community groups since 1998. Dan holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Wildlife Sciences from Oregon State University, is involved in the activities of the Wilderness Awareness School, and believes citizen science and outdoor exploration will contribute to reconnecting people to their landscapes.
